SIGNS THAT YOU MAY NEED A ROOT CANAL

Posted by admin on November 19th, 2009

Nobody wants to hear that they need a root canal. Root canals can be quite painful and are caused by decay in the tooth where the nerve tissue becomes impaired. Root canals are actually quite common and if taken care of quickly they can prevent further problems and save you money in the long run!

If you are experiencing light to heavy pain while eating or drinking hot or cold foods and liquids, you may need a root canal. Toothaches for an extended period of time can also be an indication that a root canal may be necessary. If this pain is mild and doesn’t persist, it is unlikely that you’ll need a root canal. It is a good idea however to visit the dentist if you feel any type of pain severe or not in order to avoid a problem. Other signs of needing a root canal may be pain or sensitivity while biting and chewing your food. There also may be signs of swelling around the tooth. Another common warning sign is being woken up at night by tooth pain which requires taking pain relievers.

The pain being experienced from these symptoms is caused by the exposure to the nerve from the decay being so deep into the tooth. For some people the pain can be unbearable, while with others it can be tolerated. Regardless of the intensity you should get in to see your dentist as soon as possible.

Once you’ve decided it is a good idea to visit the dentist they’ll be able quickly identify if you need a root canal. From there they will explain how the tooth will be restored and the pain stopped. After receiving your root canal you will typically receive a temporary which will protect the tooth until you receive your crown. The crown is meant to restore the tooth and have you back to living your life without worrying about tooth pain.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY TEETH CLEANED?

Posted by admin on November 12th, 2009

How often you should have your teeth cleaned is not exactly an easy question. As a matter of fact, most people put off having their teeth cleaned until there is a noticeable problem. By the time you finish reading, you’ll understand how important regular teeth cleanings are along with how much money you can save in the long run by doing so.

When you go to the dentist for your check up and cleaning they will determine how often and when you should be coming in for regular cleanings based on several things. Under normal circumstances you should have your teeth cleaned once or twice a year. During your cleaning the dental hygienist will remove any plaque, tartar, calculus or stains which are difficult to remove deposits which form despite regular at home hygiene care.

Even though having your teeth cleaned one or twice a year is excellent preventative maintenance and good hygiene, it doesn’t assure you won’t run into problems. For example, if you smoke or drink a lot of beverages with sugar and or caffeine your teeth will become stained. This includes soda, coffee and tea. How frequently you do these things will have an effect on how much staining the hygienist will be able to remove. At that point, you will be recommended to use a teeth whitening aid along with getting cleanings twice a year.

Visiting your dentist for regular teeth cleanings is intended to reduce your risk of periodontal disease. You will also be examined for oral cancer. During these examinations the dentist will also check for other serious tooth problems which can be corrected. The earlier these diseases are caught, the better chances you have of being cured and keeping all of your adult teeth. After all, we don’t want to have to search for our dentures in the morning before heading off to work.

The bottom line is that if you take care of your teeth by brushing regularly and visiting your dentist at least once a year for cleanings, you’ll be on your way to beautiful smile for many years to come.
