How often you should have your teeth cleaned is not exactly an easy question. As a matter of fact, most people put off having their teeth cleaned until there is a noticeable problem. By the time you finish reading, you’ll understand how important regular teeth cleanings are along with how much money you can save in the long run by doing so.

When you go to the dentist for your check up and cleaning they will determine how often and when you should be coming in for regular cleanings based on several things. Under normal circumstances you should have your teeth cleaned once or twice a year. During your cleaning the dental hygienist will remove any plaque, tartar, calculus or stains which are difficult to remove deposits which form despite regular at home hygiene care.

Even though having your teeth cleaned one or twice a year is excellent preventative maintenance and good hygiene, it doesn’t assure you won’t run into problems. For example, if you smoke or drink a lot of beverages with sugar and or caffeine your teeth will become stained. This includes soda, coffee and tea. How frequently you do these things will have an effect on how much staining the hygienist will be able to remove. At that point, you will be recommended to use a teeth whitening aid along with getting cleanings twice a year.

Visiting your dentist for regular teeth cleanings is intended to reduce your risk of periodontal disease. You will also be examined for oral cancer. During these examinations the dentist will also check for other serious tooth problems which can be corrected. The earlier these diseases are caught, the better chances you have of being cured and keeping all of your adult teeth. After all, we don’t want to have to search for our dentures in the morning before heading off to work.

The bottom line is that if you take care of your teeth by brushing regularly and visiting your dentist at least once a year for cleanings, you’ll be on your way to beautiful smile for many years to come.
